Cooperation, Collaboration, and Community: The One Community Model

Community Contribution

Community contribution at One Community is what will allow us to function as a full-time non-profit sustainability cooperative where nobody needs to work a traditional job. Current contribution expectations to be a Pioneer are less than 10 hours a week. On the property this model will operate with a 40-hour contribution week that will replace a traditional job and include everything needed to keep One Community operating as a fulfilling, fun, and dynamic open source project-launch blueprinting engine evolving sustainability to include: FoodEnergyHousingEducationRecreationSelf-governanceEntrepreneurship, and more. Because our purpose is to demonstrate living and creating for The Highest Good of All as a template for self-sufficient and self-replicating teacher/demonstration communities, villages, and cities all over the world, the more enriching and enjoyable we make One Community, and the more we share One Community, the more we benefit the world and ourselves.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION MODEL PURPOSE

The purpose of the One Community community contribution model is to achieve our global change goals through a Highest Good of All approach to living that is more fulfilling, fun, and comprehensively sustainable. We also project this community contribution model, combined with our revenue streams and outreach program, will allow us to operate One Community indefinitely as a place that people will be able to join just by participating/without financial investment.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS OF COOPERATIVE COMMUNITY LIVING

One Community is founded on win-win-win relationships: global – community – individual. The individual benefits of the community contribution model will be:

● Flexibility to create most of our own schedules
● More free-time than almost any traditional work or living environment
● Living environment surrounded by people creating something world-changing
● Sustainability of the model does not require financial investment from its participants
● Significantly more growth and recreation opportunities than a traditional living environment
● An environment collaboratively maintained for the deeper fulfillment of human needs

ORGANIZATION OF ACTIVITIES

community contribution, One Community, how to live, contributing to your world, making a difference, how to transform the world, be true to you, One Community, Highest Good Society, make the most of life, transformative living, a new way to live, sustainability nonprofit, living a life of service, living a life of cooperation, living a life of contribution, a meaningful life, making a differenceOrganization and structure of community contribution will be accomplished by monthly consensus meetings purposed for this. Tasks will be divided first amongst people who request them, or have specialized skills necessary for their completion, and then remaining tasks will be divided fairly on a rotating schedule for everyone else. A posted schedule is maintained for meals, classes, group work activities, etc. so people can plan accordingly with maximum flexibility.

Designated project facilitators will log hours for larger projects requiring the contribution of many people. Smaller projects/tasks will be assigned a time value by consensus and logged by the individual – allowing people to complete these tasks at the time and speed of their choice. Additionally, whenever possible, tasks will be completed as teams to make them more fun and more efficient.

People’s community contribution time is also kept in an open log so people can generally work whenever they want, time-bank additional hours, and see everyone else’s log if there is ever any question about fairness or contribution. Click here for how we are already doing this.

WHAT A DAY MIGHT LOOK LIKE AT ONE COMMUNITY

The foundation of One Community as a model for world change is demonstrating and sharing what is possible with a truly sustainable civilization living and creating for The Highest Good of All. There are two primary and interdependent components to this: making a global difference and demonstrating how much more fun and enriching life can be while doing so. Here is an example of what a few rich and full days at One Community might look like:

6:00-7:00 AM Personal enrichment class from a diversity of choices (see the Social Architecture Page)
7:30-8:30 AM Skills or other class taught by you (could be anything, see the Social Architecture Page)

HERE’S THE SAME DAY FOR SOMEONE WHO PREFERS LESS STRUCTURE
11:30-2:30 PM Home Cooked Lunch at the SEGO Center prepared and cleaned up after by you
3:00-6:00 PM Building Pod 1 with the group – today was mostly filling earthbags
put in 2.5 hours of open source contribution

Summary: Structured time was preparing the meal and building on Pod 1. The rest was unstructured and completed based on the preference of the individual.

The point of all this is showing that everything that needs to get done can be done with flexibility. The two example days are modeled on a traditional 8-hour day but a person will be able to structure and compact or spread out their weekly community contribution however they like because the structure of the model makes sure everything is getting done.

VACATION TIME AND TIME BANKING

Vacation time will not start until after 6 months living on the property because of the necessary amount of building required in the beginning stages of One Community; instead, people will be able to store/bank time. What this means is a person who works additional hours stores/banks those hours so they can take time off when they want to. In the case of emergencies, people can also borrow time. After 6 months people will earn their first week of vacation time, a second vacation week is earned after 12 months of being a community member, and we will decide by consensus once we are on the property what happens after that. Time storage and borrowing for emergencies will always be an option with vacation time scheduled during the planning meetings for the upcoming month so completion of necessary tasks continues to run smoothly.

SUMMARY

community contribution, One Community, how to live, contributing to your world, making a difference, how to transform the world, be true to you, One Community, Highest Good Society, make the most of life, transformative living, a new way to live, sustainability nonprofit, living a life of service, living a life of cooperation, living a life of contribution, a meaningful life, making a differenceLooking at everything that needs to be done, building houses for people is actually the only community task that requires (initially) more community contribution labor input than adding an additional member to the community team will produce as community contribution output. This means that as long as we have the necessary housing and food, the more like-minded people involved in the community, the easier it is to distribute community responsibilities to meet community needs. This is important because the needs of the community will grow as we have the infrastructure to offer tourism and scholarship programs, and so will community membership to attend to these needs like: cleaning of rooms, eco-tours, community tours, etc.

"In order to change an existing paradigm you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model.

You create a new model and make the old one obsolete. That, in essence, is the higher service to which we are all being called."
~ Buckminster Fuller ~
